Almshouse charities

LEAP manages the following almshouse charities

  • Previously charity no. 218050 but now a Linked Charity under the LEAP charity no. 1155672. 

  • The Trust dates back to a Charity known as the Fund for the Relief of the Bereaved founded by a deed dated 17 May 1884, and a Deed of Gift dated 28 January 1899, following the loss of 19 seamen in the ‘great gale’ in the North Sea in 1883.

  • The beneficial group that the charity aims to assist, under the terms of the Charity scheme, are for six of the almshouses, poor people resident in Brightlingsea who either (a) have physical or learning difficulties, or (b) are elderly and for the remaining two almshouses, poor women resident in Brightlingsea, with a preference for widows of seamen.

Chelmsford Almshouse Charity

  • Previously charity no, 210698 but now a Linked Charity under the LEAP charity no. 1155672. 

  •  Six flats for local people

  •  At Roman Place, Roman Road, Chelmsford

Chelmsford United Almshouses (also known as the Mildmay Almshouses) 

  • Registered charity no. 207552

  • Location:  Moulsham Road,  Chelmsford

  • An amalgam of eleven charities going back as far as 1520. The original eleven charities were set up to provide relief for the poor of Moulsham and Chelmsford. Since 1953, the primary object of the Charity has been to do this by operating the Mildmay Almshouses in Moulsham Street, Chelmsford.   These six Almshouses were founded by Thomas Mildmay in 1565.  The current terrace of six houses was rebuilt by William Mildmay in 1758 and is Grade II listed.

  • The six homes are provided for people in need of housing.  

Copland Almshouse Charity

  • Previously charity no. 226757 (founded in 1899) but now a Linked Charity under the LEAP charity no. 1155672. 

  • For people who are resident in Broomfield.

  • 4 dwellings in School Lane, Broomfield, Chelmsford, Essex.

Hoddesdon Cottage Homes for the Aged Poor better known as Queen Victoria Cottages - Hoddesdon

  • 2 bungalows in St Osyth Road, Clacton and 2 bungalows in Coppins Road, Clacton 

  • Previously charity no. 1070454 but now a Linked Charity under the LEAP charity no. 1155672. 

  • For aged persons in need of housing who have previously lived in Clacton 

John Gilders & Maskell Almshouse Charity

Loughton Almshouse Charity (also known as Mrs Whitaker’s after the lady who gave the money to build these cottages)

  • Previously charity reg no: 284248 (founded 1826) but now a Linked Charity under the LEAP charity no. 1155672 

  • 4 properties for poor persons who are inhabitants of Loughton, Essex

Mary Dains Cottages at Trimley St Mary in  Suffolk

  • Previously charity no. 234313 but now a Linked Charity under the LEAP charity no. 1155672. 

  • 6 cottages built in 1914 with money from the estate of Mary Dains for poor persons of good character with a preference for those belonging to a Non-Conformist denomination.

  • 4 dwellings in Church Hill Hempstead Essex

  • Previously charity no. 261416 (founded Feb 1871) but now a Linked Charity under the LEAP charity no. 1155672. 

  • For aged persons who are poor, an invalid or infirm and are resident in Hempstead.  If there is no suitably qualified applicant, a person resident in an adjoining parish who is otherwise duly qualified may be considered.

Miss Rutlands Almshouses

  • 4 dwellings in Luther Road, Ipswich

  • previously charity no. 211506 (founded 1906) but now a Linked Charity under the LEAP charity no. 1155672. 

  • For deserving persons of either sex from Ipswich and being also either aged persons or persons completely and permanently physically disabled.  Two shall be parishioners and communicants at the Parish Church of the Ecclesiastical Parish called the Unity Parish of St Mary Stoke with St Peter and St Mary Quay, Ipswich and shall be nominated by the Rector of the said Ecclesiastical Parish.

Nethaniah Home for the Aged

Sir William Petre's Almshouses and Chapel (also known as the Ginge Petre Charity)

  • Registered charity no. 242954 

  • Location:  Off Ingatestone High Street 

  • Founded in 1557 by Sir William Petre; the scheme has been amended several times over the years. The last scheme was dated 1977.   

  • 12 homes for poor persons of the Roman Catholic faith who are not less than 50 years of age at the time oi their appointment.

  • Previously charity no. 208357 but now a Linked Charity under the LEAP charity no. 1155672. 

  • For poor persons resident in Diocese of Norwich.

Sprowston War Memorial Cottages

  • Previously charity no. 232586 but now a Linked Charity under the LEAP charity no. 1155672. 

  • Location: Prittlewell, Southend-on-Sea 

  • Founded 1958 by Ernest Elijah Everitt, Pastor of the Evangelical Church in Colchester Road, Prittlewell at that time and who generously had them built.

  • 4 homes for aged and needy persons preferably connected with the Union of Evangelical Churches or other free church body residing in the County Borough of Southend-on-Sea.

  • 3 cottages in Love's Walk by Writtle Church

  • Previously charity no. 276582 but now a Linked Charity under the LEAP charity no. 1155672. 

  • For people in need of a home who have been living in Writtle.
